Essaouira

View of Essaouira from a fortified outpost

Two hours from Marrakech, this windy coast town is best explored in the spring when the warm weather chases the humidity. Famous for its food and restaurants, Essaouira is also known for its artistic community- explore the galleries and learn a bit about contemporary Moroccan art.

For a good place to stay, contact Jack's Kiosk-a small international newsstand on the main plaza. They rent refurbished Moroccan homes and apartments- all tastefully decorated and centrally located.

Don't miss a long walk on the beach- and dare to swim if you can handle the cold water.

Ruins of an old fort on the Essaouira beach (somewhat reminiscent of Planet of the Apes!)
