Essaouira is now a resort, attracting all kinds of tourists from across the world. Initially drawing the Hippie type in the 1970's (Jimmy Hendrix and other musicians were known to spend months at a time in the commune of Diabat, a few miles down the beach from Essaouira), it now advertises as a 'spa' vacation- a wind therapy of sorts! (the city is nicknamed the 'Windy City' and consequently a favorite hang out for surfers and other water athletes)

Anne, Jon and I simply enjoyed ourselves, visiting the city' s many monuments, art galleries and wood work craft shops.

Early mornings spent near the port, watching the boats come in, and the nets unroll reminded us that Essaouira was still an active port- though much of this trade goes to feed the tourists, in small restaurants by the docks.
