El
Jedida provides for a suprisingly rewarding visit. Though the town is
rarely featured on the standard Moroccan tour, it hides a beautifully
preserved Portuguese fortified neignborhood, testimony of the Iberian
nation's past maritime power. Sturdy remparts circle a city boasting narrow
cobble stoned streets and iron clad balconies. A European oddity at the
center of a typically 'Moroccan city'.
As
we walked along the city walls, looking out onto the port, the medina,
the ville nouvelle, and the Portuguese fortifications, we wondered at
this mix of influences and its results.
